Daily Bible reading: Ezekiel 38-39 and James 4
(James 3:8-18, GW) “Yet, no one can tame the tongue. It is an uncontrollable evil filled with deadly poison. (9) With our tongues we praise our Lord and Father. Yet, with the same tongues we curse people, who were created in God’s likeness. (10)Praise and curses come from the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, this should not happen! (11) Do clean and polluted water flow out of the same spring? (12) My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree produce olives? Can a grapevine produce figs? In the same way, a pool of salt water can’t produce fresh water. (13) Do any of you have wisdom and insight? Show this by living the right way with the humility that comes from wisdom. (14) But if you are bitterly jealous and filled with self-centered ambition, don’t brag. Don’t say that you are wise when it isn’t true. (15) That kind of wisdom doesn’t come from above. It belongs to this world. It is self-centered and demonic. (16) Wherever there is jealousy and rivalry, there is disorder and every kind of evil. (17) However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure. Then it is peaceful, gentle, obedient, filled with mercy and good deeds, impartial, and sincere. (18) A harvest that has God’s approval comes from the peace planted by peacemakers.”
The Bible speaks about the tongue 129 times. James writes about the tongue 4 times.
In chapter one he writes, “If a person thinks that he is religious but can’t control his tongue, he is fooling himself. That person’s religion is worthless” (verse 26, GW). Our religion is worthless if we cannot control our tongue. In 3:11 James writes, “Do clean and polluted water flow out of the same spring?” The very thing that is in our heart will come out of our mouth. Therefore, we must be careful for the things that we put in our heart.
The way to tame the tongue in to make sure that we plant good things in our hearts. Jesus said, “And He said to me, It is done. I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who thirsts I will give of the fountain of the Water of Life freely” (Rev. 21:6). This fountain of living waters will flow from the Lord to our inner being, then from there to our lips. (Acts 10:45-46) “And those of the circumcision, who believed (as many as came with Peter), were astonished because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the nations also. (46) For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God…”
We need the Lord on the inside to help us to produce good things. We need to continually feed our soul with the Word of God and with the Spirit of God. This is done by prayer and Bible reading. As we read these Scriptures, let us pray that the Word of God will become alive inside us, (Rom 10:10) “For with the heart onebelieves unto righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses unto salvation.”
